Universities in Chile
"The number of private universities that charge for education has
been continuously growing in Chile, with higher fees each year. While some
people feel that paying for education is the normal trend, others think that
education should be free. How
do you feel about this?"
At present, the number of
private universities in Chile has been growing so much so that most of the
university students are students of private universities. On the other hand, in
Chile exists state universities but those are not free. Therefore,
for students who do not obtain very high scores to enter a state university,
studying at a private university is not a bad alternative, because respect to
cost they are almost equal.
First, we must make it clear that private
universities are increasing while state universities do not multiply. On the
other hand, this increase in private universities makes their infrastructures of
the new faculties more modern and they are so much better equipped compared to
the state ones, where their infrastructures are older, they are worn out and
not much funds are invested to modernize them.
On the other hand, the fact that state
universities are expensive as private universities means that students, in a
certain way, prefer to study at a private university, which charges them almost
the same monthly payment as the public one, is better equipped and does not
requires them to have a score so high to enter the career they want, so they
can study in the career of their dreams, without being stopped by the test
score (PSU).
Finally, it is important to mention and
emphasize that private universities are gaining more prestige for the careers that
they impart and also they are being considered as good and trained
professionals as those of state universities with almost the same prestige.
In conclusion, I personally believe that the
universities in Chile should be free (as in Argentina) and on the other hand,
private universities could also exist for those who wish to pay for their
education, but it does not seem fair for those who do not have the resources to
pay a university and can’t study only because they are poor and because the
existing public-state universities of the country are not really public or
accessible to all Chileans.
